Good Nutrition Is Vital

Do you eat like this EVERY day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year?

No?  Me neither.
Probably because those are both pictures of the daily food intake for OLYMPIC ATHLETES!

But what about this?  Is this how you eat on a daily basis?

What?!  You're telling me you DON'T get the recommended:

8 ounces of grains
3 cups of vegetables
2 cups of fruits
3 cups of dairy
6.5 ounces of protein

every single day of your life?!

Those were the daily nutritional guidelines for a 30 year old female who is of average weight and fairly active.  I got the information from choosemyplate.gov if you want to check and see what your daily intake should be based on your age, gender, height, weight, and daily activity level.

Whatever your age, gender, height, weight, or daily activity level may be, though, good nutrition is a vital part of a HEALTHY LIFESTYLE!  Eating right is foundational to good health.  And if you are going to consistently made good choices when it comes to eating and what you put in your mouth, and ultimately your body, you HAVE to surround yourself with healthy foods.  If your fridge and cupboards are stocked with pre-processed, boxed or packaged food full of refined sugars, artificial flavors, and other such "stuff," then you aren't exactly setting yourself up for success.

That's why our counter looked like this last night after I unloaded just the FRESH fruits and vegetables I had bought for our family of four for the next week to week and a half.

This doesn't include the frozen fruits and vegetables, yogurt, nuts, dried beans, whole grain bread, eggs, milk, or anything else that was in my grocery bags after two hours of shopping in two different stores.

My husband and I have a very high monthly premium for our health insurance.  Instead of paying an insurance company "just in case" something terribly wrong happens to us or we have an unexpected emergency situation or serious health complication, we put our money towards eating right on a daily basis.  We figure we would rather invest in our health every day and enjoy the daily benefits eating right provides.

BUT, even we are not perfect.  Take, for example, the day we moved.  Breakfast was banana bread or donut holes from the Hy-Vee bakery and Yoplait yogurt cups.  Usually, I would NEVER even consider giving my children (or anyone I love or remotely care about) a donut hole and I would typically make the bread myself using whole wheat flour, honey instead of sugar, applesauce instead of oil, etc..  BUT, all my baking supplies were packed away, not to mention I simply didn't have the time that morning!

Lunch wasn't any better.  We had Domino's pizza.  And not a supreme veggie one either.  Just one topping larges to save money -- so basically starchy crust, gooey cheese, and some kind of meat.  No fruits or veggies were anywhere to be seen.  Which made me want to cry, as I am accustomed to making sure my children get something from every food group at every single meal.  BUT, again, I didn't have the time to do that, let alone the resources available as my kitchen was piled high with boxes and my fridge was completely empty except for a bottle of ketchup and a few kinds of salad dressing.

Supper?  You guessed it...leftover pizza.

The whole day was a nutritional nightmare!  My only saving grace was that I had some It Works Greens on hand!!!

I put two scoops in some OJ we had leftover from breakfast and gave each of my girls a cup.  At least then I knew they had gotten something healthy in their bodies.  In fact, they had instantly drank 4-8 servings of fruits and vegetables in a matter of seconds!  To make myself feel better, I too had some Greens in a glass of water, insuring that I got 8 servings of fruits and vegetables despite my poor eating habits that day.

While I was able to take a huge sigh of relief after drinking my water and Greens, I certainly did want to make a habit of my terrible nutrition that day.  I was more than ready to go grocery shopping and fill my fridge and pantry with our usual healthy options!!!

Maybe you have days like that too, though.  Maybe you find yourself rushing to drop the kids off at school or get them ready for the bus, then hurrying to work and doing your best to move everything from your In Box to the Out Box by 5 o'clock, battling rush hour traffic to pick up the kids, get home and look over their homework, only to fly back out the door for soccer, piano, gymnastics, or play rehearsal.  And where in there did you find time to eat those
8 ounces of grains
3 cups of vegetables
2 cups of fruit
3 cups of dairy
6.5 ounces of protein
that you're supposed to have EVERY SINGLE DAY of your life?!  You didn't?!  Why not?  :)
